Travel Tip Thursday – Tips for your vacation to Roatan Honduras
Roatan is an island that belongs to Honduras country. I truly recommend this destination, due to its exotic atmosphere, clean waters, friendly locals and a lot of activities you can practice there. However, I want to share with you some necessary information you should know before traveling to Roatan.
Hold small bills
First of all, you need to know that the official currency in Roatan is the Honduran Lempira (HNL). The exchange rate is approximatively 23 HNL to 1 USD.
Be careful while using the ATMs. A lot of them are compromised and can fool you.
Also, an important aspect related to Roatan is that the majority of local banks do not accept bills over 20 USD. Considering this, you should know that stores, restaurants, and other enterprises do the same thing. Make sure that your bills are new. That’s because it’s a high probability that they will refuse wrinkled US dollars. The reason is connected with the national banks.
What about cards?
There are enterprises that accept credit cards and those who do not. Note that once you decide to pay with your card, they will charge a high fee. My advice is to ask the staff every time in advance about the payment method.
How to dress up
Roatan is located in the subtropical area. Thus, you will notice that the temperatures are high and humid. I recommend you to put in your luggage only colored clothes such as shorts, sandals, and thin shirts. Anyway, my precious advice is to choose your clothes according to your mood and preferences.
However, if you get there during the rainy season, do not forget to take a jacket with you.
Getting around Roatan
The most used type of transportation in Roatan are taxis and water taxis. For those who have chosen to spend their vacation on the Western End, they should know that there is no need to use a car. The best way to get around is via water taxis.
There are surfaces where the only way to get around is by renting a car, such as Sandy Bay.
In case you are worried about the transportation from the airport to the hotel and reverse, you should know about “airport taxis”. These are available daily and have fixed prices. For example, to deliver you to the West End area they charge around 25 US Dollars.
A private house or a hotel?
It can be too expensive to stay overnights at a resort. For a better experience, I recommend you rent an apartment or, why not, a home, in case you are a group of friends. As I said, it will be cheaper and you will also have the chance to interact with the locals.
Roatan can be a great choice for your vacation. Make sure you get informed in advance about all the necessary details related to this destination. Dress up according to your preferences and enjoy every moment. Expect to get around via water taxis and not by luxurious cars.
