The Black Canyon is an unbelievable and often overlooked national park that’s easy to explore by car and short walks.
You will see the South Rim Road and East Portal Road. Here is a description of these roads.
You can’t really see Black Canyon from the car along South Rim Road. There are 12 overlooks requiring varying degrees of walking. Some are easily accessible. There is a visitor’s center. There are several easy hiking trails along the South Rim. Warner Point and Cedar Point are definitely worth doing.
East Portal Road is a winding, steep road down into the canyon. it is not a very long drive. You can drive both East Portal and South Rim Roads and stop for all the overlooks and visitor center in about 4 hours. Add another hour if you walk the Warner Point and Cedar Point trails.
The North Rim and the South Rim of Black Canyon are not connected. The North Rim Road is a dirt road which means it violates your contract if in a rental car. Depending on your route to/from Black Canyon, the North Rim Road could be a short detour off that route. Otherwise, it is about a 2-hour drive from the South Rim.
The South Rim is about a 25-minute drive from Montrose CO, it’s an easy drive. Beautiful ranches and several artists hanging out by the road selling goods.
We stayed at a cottage just outside of Montrose, booked through https://www.airbnb.com/.
The cottage was a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom, sitting on several acres of land. The property features a pond with a paddle boat, a trampoline, 2 longhorn steer, chickens, and bullfrogs. The 1st morning Piper was outside watching the longhorn steer, throwing rocks into the pond, listening to the chickens and bullfrogs and looked at me and said: “this is awesome mommy”. We enjoyed a relaxing weekend of farm life.
We had a terrific time on our weekend away at the Black Canyon and in Montrose.
